If you have too many windows on your screen, you won't be able to work comfortably, due to the clutter. Double Commander can help you get rid of all Finder windows and clear up your work space. You can think of this application as the Mac OS X equivalent to Total Commander from Windows. It allows you to manage your files on a twin-panel interface, which contains many useful tools. Regardless of what operations you have to perform on your files and how many, you can do everything on a single window.

Thanks to the clean layout of the user interface, you don't have to spend too much time studying the available controls, even if you run Double Commander for the first time. You can navigate through local and remote folders on two panels, on the right and left halfs of the window. Basic commands, like view, edit, copy, move and so on are displayed on the lower edge and you can execute them by clicking the commands or by pressing their corresponding function keys.

Files can be copied or extracted from an archive, by simply clicking and dragging them from one panel to another. If you have to work with more than two folders, you may open them on separate tabs, on both panels. Besides browsing through your files and moving them from one place to another, you can perform advanced operations as well. For example, you can use Double Commander's built-in archiving utility to compress selected files. You only need to click an icon, in the upper left corner of the interface and the application will display a series of output options, on a separate window.

Selecting files can be done with the aid of the Shift key, but you can also set up a mask, if you wish to select files with specific names or extensions. Furthermore, the application provides a flexible search feature, so you can find your files quite fast, even if they are located in a deep folders structure. If you wish to perform other operations faster, you may add more options on the interface, from the general settings menu, where you can make many other tweaks to Double Commander's appearance and behavior.

Pros

You can manage your files on a single window. The application provides a good number of tools, for a wide range of operations. What's more, its interface can be customized.

Cons

There are no obvious drawbacks to mention. Thanks to Double Commander's flexible and efficient design, you can manage your files anyway you want, without cluttering your screen with countless windows.
